Liverpool could be looking to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s full-back, Jeremie Frimpong, who has a release clause of £52m, which could give Trent a different role.
Liverpool are looking to bolster their squad in this January transfer window. They are primarily focusing on their defensive aspect and have already been linked to Goncalo Inacio.
The Portuguese centre-back has been linked to Real Madrid along with Liverpool. Another player who is linked with the two elite clubs is Bayer Leverkusan’s Jeremie Frimpong.
However, even Chelsea are being linked to the Dutchman. The full-back has been in great form for Xabi Alonso’s side, who are currently sitting on top of the Bundesliga table.
Liverpool looking to sign Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong
Jeremie Frimpong has been named in The Athletic’s extensive list of ’50 exciting players under 25′. The 22-year-old has been described as a ‘precocious wing-back who loves to attack’. This is the exact trait that Klopp loves to have in his full-back.
Take Robertson for example. The Scotsman is always involved in the attacks, very often providing assists and chipping in with goals.
Jeremie has already contributed to 9 goals in 11 games that he has played for Leverkusen this season. A talent scout, Jacek Kulig recognized his ‘raw speed’ but also his ability to ‘turn such talent into true ball progression’. Moreover, this is what separates him from the other rapid young full-backs, he writes.
The Dutchman has recorded a top speed of 35.96 km/hr and is the 5th fastest player in the Bundesliga. Apart from his pace, the defender’s reading of the game and desire to progress forward sets him apart. In fact, he is difficult to both attack and defend against.
Moreover, U23 scout, Antonio Mango described the player’s playing style as that of a ‘modern-day full-back’. Additionally, he lauded him for being ‘very accomplished on the ball’ and ‘technically very good’.
Would the Dutchman be a good signing for the Reds?
The former Manchester City academy product, Jeremie could be a great fit at Anfield. Liverpool benefit heavily from the attacking involvement of their full-backs. Moreover, Andy Robertson and Trent are some of the finest at their craft in the league, with Frimpong possessing identical attributes.
Meanwhile, the signing of the Leverkusen full-back could mean a new role for the current right-back, Trent. The Liverpool academy graduate has been a prominent right-back ever since his promotion to the first team.
Klopp has been using the Englishman in a hybrid role, often putting him in the midfield role. This has only amplified the 25-year-old’s terrific ball-playing ability.
The Dutchman’s potential arrival could see him tucked into the right side of defense. Meanwhile, it could open up the door to prompt Klopp to exploit Trent’s strengths in midfield.
