Former Manchester City striker and PL legend Sergio Aguero has revealed that Liverpool legend Michael Owen was the reason he supported the Reds.
The Merseysiders have had several great attackers who played for the club throughout the history. And most of them have been of English origin who have risen through the youth ranks of the club.
And perhaps one of the greatest and most talented sons of the Reds is Michael Owen. The English striker burst onto the PL scene in 1997, debuting in the Reds senior outfit. And the rest is very rightfully history.
The former English international had a wonderful career at Anfield winning the Ballon d’Or, moved to join the Galacticos. He then returned to PL with Newcastle, moved to Manchester United before ending his career at Stoke City.
Besides being a phenomenal player, he inspired the next generation of attackers.
Owen made Sergio Aguero love Liverpool
Sergio Aguero was another great striker the PL witnessed. Speaking to Stake, the former Argentine forward said,
“I used to like Liverpool when I was younger because of Owen, who had also started as a teenager. Even when I was playing on my PlayStation, I tried to play like Owen.
In my 10 years at City, we’ve had amazing games with Liverpool. Even more so lately, fighting for the Premier League head-to-head.
I’ve scored some important goals, but never got to score at Anfield, though.”
Aguero could rightfully be called a replica of Owen. Both had similar style of play as both of them were comparatively shorter which allowed them to have low centre of gravity.
This helped them to dribble through player and their exceptional finishing was never in doubt. Both took the PL by storm with their scoring abilities.
And on a poetic note, Aguero’s PL career started as Owen’s career was ending. So it is not quite surprising that one of the finest PL striker was inspired by another great of the game.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
