Liverpool forward Luis Diaz, who has been out of action since October due to a knee injury, is set to return to full training with the first team and could feature in their upcoming match against Leeds on April 17.
Diaz set to return to Liverpool starting XI
However, manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that the Colombian international was not involved in their game against Arsenal on Sunday, as they want to be cautious with his recovery after a long injury.
Speaking during his post-match press conference after the 2-2 draw against Arsenal yesterday, Klopp revealed,
“Luis Diaz will be back in full and normal team training and available for the game.”
Klopp has expressed his satisfaction with Diaz’s progress, stating that “everything is fine,” but emphasized the importance of being careful.
Diaz’s injury has been a significant blow for Liverpool, as they have struggled throughout the season without one of their key players. His return to full fitness in the Premier League run-in will undoubtedly provide a boost to their Champions League aspirations.
Diaz was an essential player for Liverpool last season, causing chaos for opposition full-backs and being their best forward at times.
The forward was initially ruled out until after the World Cup, but Liverpool were given hope for his return as he was included in their squad for their Dubai training camp after the tournament.
However, he was sent home early after an incident during training, much to the disappointment of Klopp and the team.
But now, with his imminent return, Diaz’s availability for the game against Leeds will be a significant boost for Klopp and the team as they look to maintain their style of performance for the remainder of the season.
Thiago on the verge of making a return
Klopp has also highlighted the importance of having a long week to train and recover, with midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who has had few training sessions, needing to work on his fitness.
Liverpool could have done with a bit more composure in the attacking third during their recent match against Arsenal, with missed chances from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.
However, with Diaz’s return, Liverpool will have another attacking option to rely on, which should give them a better chance of securing a Champions League spot.
