Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has admitted that Curtis Jones’ red card against Tottenham Hotspurs was harsh compared to what Cristian Romero did last night against Chelsea.
Tottenham Hotspurs disastrously lost 4-1 against Chelsea last night. And some of the faults behind this loss can be blamed upon themselves.
Argentine defender Cristian Romero put in a tackle inside his box and the follow-through on Enzo Fernandez at the 27th minute resulted in a penalty.
After a thorough VAR check referee showed a red card to Romero. And Cole Palmer stepped up to equalize for the Blues.
In the 55th minute Spurs fullback Destiny Udogie saw a red for a second yellow with the first one given to him for a reckless two-footed challenge on Raheem Sterling.
Many pundits are contradicting whether the first yellow should have been a red.
Gary Neville criticizes Tottenham defender Cristian Romero for his red card against Chelsea
While commentating on the match, the former Manchester United defender compared the incident to what happened when Liverpool faced the North London side. He said,
“If you go back to Curtis Jones’ challenge a few weeks ago that I thought was harsh, this one was worse”.
The incident took place in the infamous and most controversial match of this season. Curtis Jones was shown a red card for a follow-through that landed on Yves Bissouma.
And VAR decided that it was a red card for the Merseyside player even though many thought it was a ‘soft’ decision.
Neville took the side of Jones that day and said,
“I know when you’re doing someone. I’ve done it myself. It’s showing the end motion which looks bad.
His foot just slips. He’s gone to tackle the ball. It’s not a red card but he’ll probably get one and it’ll ruin the game.
You can look at that one of two ways. You slow it down all day long and it looks like a leg breaker. It’s one of the ones where he’s gone in genuinely and his foot has slipped.”
The lack of consistency regarding refereeing in PL is increasing day by day. The only way to get over the inconsistencies is if all the clubs come together and appeal to the PL authorities to act with effectiveness.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
