Liverpool are going all in for a midfield rebuild however new transfers in defense are also on the list. The Reds are looking for some good defensive options.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are interested in signing a new center-back for the club. The Reds are reportedly to ‘attack’ the market for one defender this summer.
The Merseysiders challenged for the quadruple in the 2021-22 season. Although their form dropped severely and they had very poor results.
Liverpool finished 5th in the PL and failed to qualify for UCL. The club also did not get the desired outcome in the domestic cup competitions.
So it has been pretty evident that the club will be busy in the transfer market this summer. They have already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and now they are looking forward to signing more.
Liverpool to bolster their defense with new transfers
The Reds are also hoping to get some work done in terms of some defensive signings. Romano said on his Here We Go Podcast,
“About Liverpool, let me mention the centre-backs because I think Liverpool also want to do something in terms of centre-backs in this transfer window. It’s not a priority now.
I think the priority is on the midifeld, of course, but in the second part of this market, or maybe earlier we will see, I think they will also attack the centre-backs market.
Maybe a left-footed centre-back. Evan Ndicka was offered to Liverpool but they decided against this opportunity and he is joining Roma.
So, there were some possibilities, but Liverpool I think will explore the market of centre-backs too.”
Defensively the Reds looked very unstable last season. Van Dijk has not performed up to his expectations, Konate missed 13 games due to injuries, and Matip and Gomez’s performances have been questionable.
The only positive has been Allison Becker’s performances that held the team in a respectable position. His performances won him the club the Men’s Player of the Year award.
As per Romano, Liverpool are interested in a left-sided center-back who is preferably left-footed. Micky van de Ven is a player whose name has come up.
The 22-year-old Dutch defender is currently playing for the Netherlands U-21 team at the European Championship. He has earned some praise for his versatility as he can also play in the left-back position.
Other names suggested are Goncalo Inacio of Sporting, Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, and Edmond Tabsoba of Bayer Leverkusen. So it will be interesting to see which deal Liverpool will crack before the pre-season.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
