Liverpool have made an approach for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, but the first bid is already rejected as the Reds prepare for an increased bid.
Klopp has already bolstered his midfield by signing Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai for a combined fee of £95m this summer.
However, with senior midfielders like Henderson and Fabinho leaving the club, they need more midfielders at their expense.
As expected the Reds were long admirers of the Belgian Romeo Lavia ever since they were in the market for new recruits.
Apart from the obvious target Lavia, the Reds have other targets as well. Ryan Gravenberch, Cheick Doucoure, and Sofyan Amrabat were all potential candidates to join Anfield.
However, Ryan’s transfer looks completed, Doucoure looks to be overpriced and Amrabat has already chosen the Red Devils over the Reds.
Now, Liverpool looks to have taken a significant step in their pursuit of Lavia, after Romano confirmed they had approached Southampton to discuss a move.
‘Liverpool have approached Southampton for Romeo Lavia’: Fabrizio Romano
Romano shared the news that Liverpool had been in contact with the Champions side in a Tweet.
“Understand Liverpool have approached Southampton for Roméo Lavia — talks on player side have been ongoing for more than one month.
Jason Wilcox is leading talks now for Southampton and insists on £50m package deal. Lavia remains one of the top candidates on Liverpool’s list.”
The update comes shortly after fans thought they spotted a potential transfer clue. It involved a private plane that traveled to the club’s training camp in Germany last week.
In addition, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has claimed that Lavia has now “agreed on personal terms” with the Reds, despite growing a “little annoyed” that Liverpool were taking so long with their approach.
Thus, the Merseysiders are now planning to submit a 2nd and increased bid for the Championship side’s midfielder after Southampton rejected their 1st bid of £35m plus add-ons.
Now, as per Romano, Liverpool’s increased bid will be going around £42.5m guaranteed fee plus £2.5m add-ons up to a total £45m package.
Now that the start of the season is approaching, the Reds need to bring in at least 1 midfielder. Also, Klopp needs to add depth to the middle of the engine despite two signings.
After bad performances by most players last season, the club needs to step up to the challenge this time around. With senior players not in the squad this season, they need new leaders to lead them this season.
