ESPN pundit, Alejandro Moreno has insisted that Liverpool player, Trent Alexander-Arnold cannot be the most valuable player in the squad for Jurgen Klopp.
While speaking on ESPN, Moreno claimed that the German has had to hide Trent to protect him defensively. This conversation came up with a journalist Sam Tighe while talking on the show.
Sam put the England right-back at number three in his own list of Liverpool’s most important players this season.
The trend has continued with England International as he continues to get both applause and criticism for his performances.
Like the rest of his teammates, last season was tough for the 25-year-old as well, as Liverpool finished outside the top four. In fact, he came under a lot of criticism over his defensive prowess.
Trent Alexander-Arnold criticised Liverpool performances again
Although the right-back remains one of the best passers of the ball in the country, he has come under scrutiny for his defensive performances.
Moreover, former Man United goalkeeper, Ben Foster said that Trent was outrageous in Liverpool’s win over Villa.
Such high praises might explain why Sam put Trent at number three on his list. Trent was only behind Mo Salah and Alisson Becker, who undoubtedly have been their 2 best players this season.
Moreno, however, was baffled by how high the Liverpool right-back was placed.
Moreover, he insisted that there was no way that Trent could be considered Liverpool’s third most valuable player.
“Here’s the thing about Trent: Jurgen Klopp has had to find a place for him on the field to hide him. So that defensively he doesn’t get exposed. If there’s a player that you have to hide on the field, then he cannot be your most valuable player.
The reason that Trent Alexander-Arnold is not playing right-back for Liverpool is because he is horrendous defensively. So they’ve had to find a different way for him to play.”
Although the 25-year-old has had issues defensively, he is absolutely superb going forward. Hence, slotting him into the midfield role is a way of trying to play to his strengths and bring out his best.
Moreover, Trent would have been dropped Klopp deemed him unnecessary and not contributing enough to the team.
It is important to move a player around to accommodate him into different positions to find their best spot. Instead of dropping them directly, this would give a lot of options for the team.
