David Moyes has admitted that Trent Alexander Arnold’s new role has caused his team problems as Liverpool come back to win 2-1 at London Stadium.
His new role in midfield has been paying off as the Reds haven’t lost any games since he has shifted into the middle. The hybrid fullback/playmaker role was popularized by Pep as we saw Cancelo do the same while at City.
The 24-year-old has provided 5 assists in this new role which is the most in the same amount of games in the league. Moreover, his creativity has been the key as he has caused problems for the opposition teams.
Trent shines for Liverpool yet again
Cody Gakpo and Matip were on target as the Reds registered their 3rd win in a row.
While Trent was in the middle of the park, causing ‘problems’ to the Londoners. The Englishman dictated things in his new creative role that left the West Ham manager frustrated.
“It’s difficult because of the way Liverpool play. The position Trent Alexander-Arnold is taking up is causing different problems. But, look, the players played very well.
We scored a very good opening goal. I’m not pleased with the two we conceded because I think both were avoidable. Certainly the corner kick was. The first one we could have closed the shot down better. That was it.”
After Paqueta scored a stunner in the 12th minute, it seemed as if Liverpool’s miseries were set to continue. But an outside-the-box strike from Cody Gakpo brought Liverpool level in the 18th minute. Thereafter, a 67th-minute header from Matip gave the Mersysiders the lead through a corner.
Trent however, was lauded by pundits and fans alike for his yet another superb performance in the middle of the park. He played some great passes which made life difficult for the Hammers. Moreover, he even won the Player of the Match award for his stellar display.
Moyes left frustrated
Moyes was left frustrated as he thought that his side were denied a penalty and questioned ‘strange’ refereeing decision.
“We tried to get the game back. We tried a lot of things and had one or two opportunities to score. Obviously, for the referee not to give a penalty kick, I found very strange.
I think I do know a wee bit about handball and the player lunges for a tackle. Because of that he has, to go with him arms out.
I get the bit about trying to break his fall. But this one, he’s lunged in the box and I think it’s definitely hit him in the arm.
We had a penalty kick given against us for Arsenal against Micky Antonio here, with his arm being out at the side. Not every handball is going to result in the same decision. But tonight is think an 8/10 penalty, and I find it hard that he’s not given it.
