In a continuing transfer saga, Fluminense’s president, Mario Bittencourt, has shed light on Liverpool’s pursuit of midfielder Andre last year.
Speaking to local media, Bittencourt revealed that Liverpool made an initial offer of €30 million for Andre, which the Brazilian club turned down as they were determined to retain the player until the end of the Copa Libertadores campaign, a decision that proved fruitful as Fluminense clinched the title.
“We had an offer for André of €30m from Liverpool and we said ‘no’ because we had agreed with the player that we wouldn’t sell him because we wanted to win the Libertadores. Since then, we’ve had a second offer, from an English club, for well under €30m, which we turned down because we felt it was below what Fluminense expects for the player,”
Said Bittencourt Quoted by Globo Esporte.
Despite Liverpool’s continued interest, a second offer from an English club fell well below the €30 million mark, leading to its rejection by Fluminense.
Bittencourt explained that the decision was aligned with their commitment to Andre, who had agreed to stay with the club and was made in anticipation of receiving a more satisfactory offer in the future.
Fluminense are now open to selling Andre, expecting him to become their highest-profile sale in history. The club sets the bar at over €35 million for a potential deal.
However, as the clock ticks down, with Fluminense reportedly having 24 hours to conclude a sale, doubts arise about the feasibility of securing a significant European bid mid-season.
The spotlight is now on Liverpool, as fans wait to see if the Premier League club will return with an improved offer to meet Fluminense’s valuation for Andre.
The situation remains fluid, leaving room for negotiations and the possibility of a breakthrough in the ongoing transfer saga.
