‘Flawless’: BBC journalist claims £67m Liverpool star may be the best player in the Premier League now

In a discussion on BBC 5 Live, BBC journalist Rory Smith has asserted that Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, might well be the best player in the Premier League, even though goalkeepers are often underappreciated in football.

Despite Liverpool boasting several world-class players across various positions, Smith believes Alisson Becker deserves more recognition for his exceptional performances. He expressed his views, stating,

“I think you can make a case that Alisson is the best player in the Premier League in his position, that he might well be the best player in the Premier League.”

While acknowledging that goalkeepers might not receive the same acclaim as outfield players, Smith emphasized Alisson’s exceptional abilities, prompting consideration for the goalkeeper as a standout player in the league.

He highlighted Alisson’s flawless performances and the crucial role he plays for Liverpool.

However, Smith also noted the likelihood of Alisson not winning accolades like the Footballer of the Year award due to the inherent bias against goalkeepers in such individual honours.

Despite this potential oversight, Smith firmly stated,

“I think he’s the standout player in the Premier League thus far. I think he’s been flawless.”

This recognition comes as a reminder of Alisson’s pivotal role in Liverpool’s success and the impact he has had since joining the club for a reported £67 million, which, according to Sky Sports, has proven to be a bargain considering his contributions on the field.

The discussion sheds light on the underappreciation of goalkeepers in individual awards, with Alisson emerging as a standout player deserving of recognition in the Premier League.
