Premier League has confirmed that Liverpool will not receive the chance of a rematch against Tottenham Hotspurs after a controversial loss on Saturday.
The Merseysiders faced their first loss of the season against Spurs on Saturday, most of which can be attributed to poor refereeing. The most infuriating decision was ruling out Luis Diaz’s goal without checking for offside.
And since then the controversy has not stopped. PGMOL released a statement soon after the final whistle that the mistake was a “significant human error”.
Liverpool’s official statement countered the statement saying they “will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”
Moreover, there have been suggestions of a rematch between the two teams.
However, PL has debunked the second suggestion.
PL rejects the possibility of a Liverpool vs Tottenham rematch
PL has made it clear that there would not be any rematch between the Reds and the North London side.
This season, there have been too many matches where poor refereeing mistakes have cost teams points.
PL has suggested that if they allow this rematch to happen then other teams who have faced the same situation will also demand for rematch. And that would harm the progression of the league.
So the possibility of that happening is completely out of the equation. However, the audio being released would actually make things quite clear. The Anfield giants should be persistent in their pursuit of a resolution.
If the goal by would have stood then the result of the match so easily could have been different. The Reds could have actually ended up winning the game and climbed to the top of the PL table. But fortune did not favour them and currently, they are in 4th place.
