Liverpool fans may be disappointed as star midfielder Thiago Alcantara faces another injury setback, potentially delaying the much-anticipated partnership with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister in the midfield.
The two summer signings, especially Szoboszlai, have already made a positive impact at Anfield, consistently featuring in Premier League matches, while Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch have rotated as the third midfielder.
However, Thiago is yet to make an appearance in the new-look midfield setup this season due to ongoing injury issues.
The Spanish midfielder, highly regarded for his talent, has been sidelined since April, with his expected return date repeatedly postponed.
Jurgen Klopp on Thiago Alcantara
Jurgen Klopp expressed his admiration for Thiago in the past, emphasizing his importance to the team.
Klopp mentioned in April 2022:
“He’s an outstanding player – wow. I knew that when he arrived here, of course. He was unlucky with injuries and stuff like this at the start, but when he is fit he can give the game a real rhythm.
He’s got an eye for that, he calms the game down in the right moments, he has a sensational overview of the game. I saw that a lot in football games, too, I just didn’t have the feet to use it. So thank God he does! I can imagine you enjoyed it, I did as well.”
Said Klopp.
Despite Klopp’s praise, Thiago’s persistent injury problems have raised doubts about his future at Liverpool.
The 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract and is likely to leave the club as a free agent next summer.
There is even a possibility of him departing in the January transfer window, with interest from Saudi Arabian clubs.
This leaves Thiago with limited time to return to Liverpool’s playing squad. Since joining the club in 2020, he has struggled with fitness issues and has played only 67 Premier League matches in three years.
Last year, he had just 14 league starts, and Liverpool is already planning for a future without him.
However, Klopp remains eager to see Thiago join Szoboszlai and Mac Allister in the midfield to add another dimension to the team’s pursuit of the Premier League title before the season ends.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
