Liverpool have reportedly grown interested in young Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg, who is breaking records in the Championship.
The 16-year-old Sunderland midfielder has earned quite a name for himself. Rigg has created a furore with his performances in the second tier of English football.
According to a report via British media outlet Sunderland Echo, the Reds are exploring the option to sign the youngster.
The report has also mentioned that PL giants like Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are also keeping an eye on the emerging English player.
Furthermore, quite surprisingly, Bayern Munich and Birmingham City are also interested in the teenage sensation.
Chris Rigg: A Prospect for Liverpool to Look At
Chris Rigg, the young gun for Sunderland, despite being only 16, has already made 11 senior appearances for the Black Cats.
He has scored two goals so far in the senior red and white outfit, one in the Championship, another being a Carabao Cup goal.
The England U-17 international has come out of the bench seven times this season in the league, still awaiting his first Championship start.
The teenager averages 0.6 tackles and an 83.8% pass completion rate in the Championship while maintaining a 6.24 rating (stats via WhoScored).
Rigg became Sunderland’s youngest-ever outfield player in January 2023, when he came off the bench in an FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury Town.
The English midfielder also became Sunderland’s youngest-ever goalscorer at the age of 16 years and 51 days. He scored against Crewe Alexandra back in August 2023 to claim the record.
The stats and the overall performances make him a prospect of interest for the big clubs.
The Henderson Parallel: Rigg Next in Line?
Liverpool have past connections with Sunderland as the Merseysiders signed young Jordan Henderson for £20m in 2011.
Henderson went on to be the captain of the side, building upon the succession of club legend Steven Gerrard. He led the team to many silverware glory, which earned him the legend status.
The parallels are quite thought-provoking and can easily evoke hope within Liverpool fans.
Even though LFC are a master of acquiring young talents and nurturing them into world-class players, the imminent departure of Jurgen Klopp can damage that reputation a bit.
Still, in this uncertain world of football, anything is possible and only time will reveal more about the story.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
