Liverpool have had three bids rejected from Southampton for Romeo Lavia and now, out of nowhere, they have made a British record bid for Moises Caicedo.
It has been a crazy last 24h for the Reds as they bid a record fee of £111m for Caicedo. It was almost a done deal and the player was destined to move to Anfield.
However, it hasn’t been the case as Caicedo is waiting for Chelsea and is only pushing to join the Blues. This hasn’t helped Klopp as it means that his search for another midfielder continues.
Russell Martin has offered an update on Romeo Lavia’s future after confirming the midfielder won’t start for Southampton this weekend.
Liverpool have had three bids rejected for the Belgium international. The Saints knocked back their latest offer of £46m on Monday. Since then, they have also rejected a £48m bid from Chelsea for the midfielder.
However, Lavia has been overshadowed by Caicedo in the transfer news in the past 48 hours.
Moreover, the record fee was accepted by Brighton for the Ecuadorian. And the club is willing to sell the player to the highest bidder.
If Caicedo doesn’t agree on a move to Liverpool and Chelsea doesn’t outbid Liverpool, he could end up at Brighton this season.
Liverpool could once again turn to Lavia as he misses the Southampton game
After a crazy turn of events in the past 24 hours, the Reds could turn their attention towards Lavia now.
The 19-year-old could make his first appearance of the season against Norwich City on Saturday. He was an unused sub against Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day for Southampton.
Confirming that Lavia won’t start against the Canaries, Martin alluded to Caicedo when offering an update on his midfielder’s future.
“It’s not easy but he trained really well today. He’s not had enough minutes in pre-season. I don’t think I’d ask him to start a game after the minutes he has had and everything that is going on. In these situations, you think back to yourself as a 19 year old.
How would you cope with that? He’s been great, some days much better than others but there has been so much noise and he is a really top lad and really top player.
The Romeo situation has been really fluid throughout and other things may happen in the market that influence the situation, we have no control over that.
Romeo is getting fitter and fitter and trained really well, whether he will be in the squad or not I just don’t know and I can’t give you an answer.”
