Liverpool have been active in the transfer market in their pursuit of a midfielder and their interest in the Saints’ star, Romeo Lavia has been evident.
With a summer rebuild underway, Liverpool have started off well with the signing of Mac Allister. However, with other players on the list, the Reds are looking at cheaper options available in the market.
Their interest in the former Man City U18 player, Lavia has been evident after his stellar campaign for Southampton.
The ever-reliable, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the Reds’ interest in the player. Klopp has been looking at young stars to be his main engine in the middle of the park.
With the kind of season Lavia has had, he has gained interest from across Europe despite the relegation. He was Saints’ stand-out player in a disappointing season for them.
Romeo Lavia: could he be a part of the Liverpool midfield next season?
Signing quality players from Southampton is no new thing for Liverpool. The likes of Lallana, Mane, Van Dijk, and Henderson are a few names that pop up.
However, this might not be an easy purchase as Lavia has had a few clubs looking to sign him. Also, Southampton are expecting a fee of £45m for the Belgian.
The Italian journalist revealed the Reds’ interest in him.
“Understand Liverpool asked conditions of Roméo Lavia deal, they’re in the race. Arsenal, working on this deal for 15 days — no official bid from both clubs yet. #LFC
Man Utd and Chelsea, monitoring the situation but not in active talks yet.”
After a disappointing season, it is evident that the aging midfield would need replacement. Hence, Klopp has been targeting the likes of Kone, Thuram, Gravenberch, Veiga, and Lavia.
As a result, the signing of the young Southampton machine would represent a shrewd coup for the Merseyside giants. Also, it could offer Klopp the perfect heir to Fabinho’s role. Moreover, he could be a young player who could be the club’s next Javier Mascherano.
The Belgian is prolific in winning tackles, and a confident ball-winner. He also boasts similar positional experience with the capability of also playing centre-back just like his retired positional peer.
As per FBref, he ranks in the top 30% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for blocks, interceptions, tackles, successful take-ons, and pass completion per 90. He even ranked in the top 12% for possession won per 90.
Hence, it would be a great signing for both parties, and under Klopp, the youngster could be a hit in midfield. Also, fans could dream that the Belgian could reach his full potential like Mascherano at the club.
