Liverpool are considering a potential transfer move for Federico Chiesa, the talented Italian forward currently playing for Juventus.
The Reds had previously shown keen interest in Chiesa following his impressive displays at the European Championships two years ago, with rumors even suggesting an £86 million bid was made.
As Liverpool aims to strengthen their squad following a lackluster season, they have already secured the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton. However, the club is eager to make further additions and revamp their first-team roster.
The financial condition of The Old Lady
Juventus’ asking price for Chiesa is expected to be significantly lower than in previous years, with reports suggesting a figure of around €35 million-€45 million (£30 million-£38.5 million). This reduced valuation can be attributed to several factors, including Juventus’ financial situation.
The club failed to secure a spot in the Champions League, settling instead for participation in the Europa Conference League.
Their disappointing performance in Europe, combined with a points deduction and a seventh-place finish in Serie A, resulted in financial setbacks.
Chiesa himself has endured setbacks in the form of injuries, including an anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for seven months starting in January 2022. As a result, he has made only six Serie A starts in the past 18 months as he strives to avoid further setbacks.
Liverpool in the race for Federico Chiesa
Liverpool, along with Newcastle, have shown interest in Chiesa’s situation, with manager Jurgen Klopp reportedly spearheading the pursuit. Chiesa is currently under contract with Juventus until 2025, and there are no indications of a contract renewal at this stage.
The Reds seemingly have an advantage in the race for Chiesa’s signature, as they are prepared to offer him a lucrative salary that Juventus cannot currently match.
Chiesa said earlier this month, during the international break with Italy:
“I am here working with the international team and our goal in the Nations League, then we will see. I am at Juventus and I am thinking about Juventus.”
A separate report in Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited by Sport Witness, claims that Liverpool leads the way for any move for the former Fiorentina star and could ramp up their interest next week.
Moreover, further reports also suggest that the Merseyside club have made contact with Chiesa’s agent Cali Ramadani for a possible move this summer.
Why Chiesa?
Despite a relatively poor season for Juventus, where Chiesa scored only two goals in 21 Serie A games, his potential as a versatile and skillful forward remains evident.
Known for his speed, finishing ability, and creative flair in the final third, Chiesa possesses qualities that align with Liverpool’s attacking style.
He could serve as a successor to Mohamed Salah, who has been a standout player but occasionally experiences dips in form.
Alternatively, Chiesa could provide strong competition for Salah and offer an excellent alternative during periods when the Egyptian star is less effective in front of the goal.
As Liverpool continues to assess their options in the transfer market, the possibility of acquiring Federico Chiesa represents an exciting opportunity to bolster their attacking prowess and add depth to their squad.
