Chelsea are preparing a new and improved offer for Moises Caicedo after the Brighton midfielder reportedly snubbed a move to Liverpool.
After making a record bid of £111m for the midfielder, and Brighton accepting it, the Reds were confident of securing their target.
However, this hasn’t been the case as the player has reportedly snubbed Liverpool and wants a move to Stamford Bridge.
But the Seagulls would only sell the player to the highest bidder and at this point, it is Liverpool. If the Blues don’t outbid the £111m and the player doesn’t wish to move to Anfield, he would end up at Brighton.
Chelsea have previously made three unsuccessful offers for Caicedo worth between £60-80m. However, as per The Times, the Blues are preparing an improved offer to match the Liverpool bid.
Caicedo denies the chance to play for Liverpool as he prefers Chelsea
The Ecuadorian has reportedly agreed personal terms with Chelsea 2 months back and is keen on joining them. This has seen him reject an opportunity to join the Reds.
If Chelsea are to acquire the player, he would go on to become the most expensive player in PL history. The previous player would be Enzo Fernandes, whom Chelsea acquired after his World Cup win.
While Chelsea looks to bring Caicedo to West London, their deal for Leeds United star Tyler Adams has fallen through.
The USA international had completed at least part of a medical in London after Chelsea activated his £20m release clause.
However, talks between the midfielder and the club broke down on Friday. Mauricio Pochettino was asked about Chelsea’s pursuit of Caicedo at his pre-match press conference on Friday.
“I think you know me very well – I never talk about players that do not belong to us. I am so respectful. I can tell you that we are working really hard to try to add more players to the squad. Like any club, we are working hard to try to add more quality, to reinforce the squad.
It’s obvious [that we are looking to sign more players] because when you look at the squad and compare it with last season, too many midfielders left the squad. We are working hard to try to see, but it’s important to be respectful. That is the way I love to work and the way we need to work together at the club.”
Chelsea have spent heavily over the past 12 months but only finished 12th in the Premier League last season.
Liverpool, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the Champions League for only the second time under Klopp. However, they did have an impressive run at the end of the campaign.
Now, the Caicedo and Lavia saga makes it for a greater affair ahead of their clash tomorrow.
