Naby Keita, the former Liverpool midfielder, has experienced a further decline in his market value since departing Anfield in the summer.
Keita’s five-year tenure with Liverpool was marked by a mix of success and injuries, and he left for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen on a free transfer in June.
However, Keita’s return to Germany has been plagued by a recurring pattern of injuries.
He recently made his debut for Werder only two weeks ago, but he had to be substituted before completing an hour of play due to yet another injury setback.
Naby Keita’s decline started right after joining Liverpool
Keita’s situation is disappointing, especially considering his potential to become a superstar when he joined Liverpool.
His initial transfer fee of £48 million appeared to be a reasonable investment for Liverpool at the time.
Nevertheless, according to BILD, Keita’s current market value has dropped to less than £8 million, a decrease of over £2.5 million since joining Bremen, as per figures from Transfermarkt.
Under different circumstances, Keita might have remained a key player at Liverpool, given that he is only 28 years old and still had much to offer in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.
However, his career is at risk of stagnation. Werder Bremen did grant him a three-year contract this summer, showing some faith in his potential.
Nonetheless, Keita must reverse his fortunes quickly. Ole Werner, the club’s manager, has seemingly expressed frustration with Keita as early as a month ago.
Keita’s current injury is expected to keep him sidelined for at least the next two games. Patience will be required from Werder Bremen, but unless Keita can return to the field soon, his market value is likely to continue declining.
