Former Arsenal player, and now pundit Paul Merson thinks that Liverpool should sell Mohamed Salah and bring in Bukayo Saka with that money to replace him.
Liverpool had a good transfer window this summer as they successfully completed the desired midfield rebuild.
The Anfield Giants were able to sign Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
But all of these came at a price as they lost two senior midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Pro League.
Moreover, the Reds could receive another shock as Saudi side Al-Ittihad is desperate to sign Mohamed Salah. And his future at Anfield is looking quite unsure at this moment.
Paul Merson insists on buying Bukayo Saka to replace Salah at Liverpool
While speaking on Sky Sport’s Soccer Saturday, pundit Paul Merson suggested that the Reds should sell Salah and get Bukayo Saka in place of him. He stated,
“Do they sell him for £200 million and then in January see if they can get Saka from Arsenal for 150?
I’m thinking, one person’s 31 (years old), if I can get £200 million who’s the next one in line? Who’s going to be the next big thing?
Who’s the next one in line? It’s definitely Saka, he’s the best right winger about after Salah!”
Clinton Morrison added to this comment by saying,
“If it doesn’t happen by Thursday (the Saudi Pro League transfer deadline), it will definitely happen next year.”
What Merson said makes it complete from the business point of view. The club will be receiving a record transfer fee of £200M for Salah who has only one or two years of his prime.
On the other hand, the Merseysiders will be getting a young world-class talent who can serve the club for the foreseeable future.
However, from a footballing perspective, this makes absolutely no sense. Saka is a player on whom the Gunners rely and pretty much is the main man of the team.
Also, Mikel Arteta absolutely loves the 21-year-old, and the club and the fans want him to stay. So it is safe to assume that he will stay at the London club.
Although the chances of him moving to Anfield are almost zero, the possibility just cannot be discarded. The world of football is full of uncertainty but Liverpool should try finding other options as well.
The Saudi window closes by September 7, let’s what’s the next offer on the table for the Egyptian.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
