Liverpool have informed RB Leipzig they will trigger the release clause of Dominik Szoboszlai, with the deal now considered done and medical to take place in the coming days.
Szoboszlai has emerged as a surprise priority target for the Reds as their midfield rebuild continues. However, news of his interest only came on Wednesday when he was looking for plausible clubs to play for next season.
The situation has developed swiftly since then, with many reporting on Friday morning that the club was prepared to push forward with a deal.
Reports now understand that Liverpool will trigger a release clause in the 22-year-old’s contract. This means the deal for Szoboszlai is expected to be worth €70 million, as stipulated by the fee agreed in his contract with Leipzig.
With talks having escalated quickly, the likelihood is that the midfielder will be unveiled in the coming days.
Szoboszlai’s arrival will follow that of Alexis Mac Allister earlier this summer. Now the pair is in line to take up the two advanced roles in Jurgen Klopp‘s new box midfield.
The Hungary captain joined Leipzig from sister club Salzburg in 2021 and has gone on to score 20 goals and make 22 assists in 91 games.
He has been used in a variety of roles all across the midfield and in attack. He even plays as a center-forward, and his versatility could be a key asset to the Reds.
Meetings were held with Szoboszlai’s camp earlier in the week, with personal terms not due to be an issue.
Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool – here we go!
The dynamic Hungarian’s move to Liverpool has been confirmed by the transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano. He wrote on Twitter, like any other transfer news, about the triggering of the release clause. And his golden words ‘here we go’ is anything but an official confirmation.
Now that the Leipzig player is a Liverpool player (with only a fee to be paid to the club) he would fit right in Klopp’s XI. With the signing of the creative midfielder, Mac Allister, the Hungarian would be a great partner to the Argentine.
Moreover, his versatility could be a key asset with the Hungarian even able to play in the centre-forward role. This could be a huge plus for Klopp with him possibly playing behind Nunez or partnering him.
All in all, the Reds’ faithful must be happy regarding the signing of another midfielder who is regarded highly. It needs to be seen whether the Hungarian would live up to expectations and become another fan favorite.
