Liverpool FC have reportedly made an initial bid of £26m (€30m) to sign Perr Schuurs from Torino this summer.
The Dutch defender has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time. After Schurrs’ impressive debut season in Serie A, the club is keen to strengthen its backline with his acquisition.
Liverpool bid rejected for Schuurs
However, Torino have rejected the offer, insisting on a minimum fee of £34m (€40m) for the 23-year-old.
Despite the setback, Liverpool remains determined to secure Schuurs’ signature and are preparing an improved bid. The club faces competition from Napoli, who are also interested in the defender.
Van Dijk’s successor?
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new center-back is motivated by the need for a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, who is approaching 32 years of age.
While several defenders have been linked to Anfield in recent months, including Micky van de Ven, Goncalo Inácio, and Antonio Silva, Schuurs has emerged as a serious target.
Liverpool owners FSG determined to bring Schuurs to Anfield
Standing at 6ft 2in, he possesses speed, aerial prowess, and the ability to play out from the back. This makes him an ideal fit for Liverpool’s style of play.
Torino are reluctant to part ways with Schuurs. But Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are determined to bring him to the club this summer.
FSG are expected to return with an improved offer despite Napoli’s competing bid of €28m (£24m). Schuurs, whose contract runs until 2026, with an option for an additional year, has shown no hurry to make a decision on his future.
However, a move to the Premier League may prove difficult to resist.
Schurrs’ impressive stats at Torino
The Dutchman’s recent performances for Torino have been impressive, with high rankings in tackles completed and clearances per game among his peers.
Additionally, his leadership qualities have been praised by former Manchester City goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus, highlighting his potential impact both on and off the pitch.
While the pursuit of Schuurs is ongoing, Liverpool’s focus remains on other transfer targets, such as a defensive midfielder like Romeo Lavia.
The club has also been linked with Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, but the success of such a transfer depends on various factors.
This includes player willingness and potential outgoings like Thiago and Matip, which could affect Liverpool’s defensive reinforcement plans.
As the transfer window progresses, further developments will shape Liverpool’s approach to signing Perr Schuurs or alternative defensive targets.
