Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a January move for Bournemouth’s talented defender, Lloyd Kelly, as they seek to address their defensive concerns.

Liverpool’s Summer Search Continues

The Reds had explored options for a left-sided center-back during the summer transfer window, with interest in Levi Colwill, who later signed with Chelsea.

However, no defensive signings materialized, leaving Liverpool’s defensive depth somewhat exposed.

With Joel Matip’s contract set to expire next summer and Virgil van Dijk aging at 32, Liverpool lack a specialist left-sided center-back in their squad.

Consequently, the club is expected to continue pursuing suitable targets in future transfer windows.

Liverpool Eye Lloyd Kelly

According to 90min, Lloyd Kelly, a 24-year-old Bournemouth star, is on Liverpool’s radar, and the club is considering making an approach in the January transfer window.

Kelly’s contract is due to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season, potentially making negotiations easier and more cost-effective.

Three Clubs Eye Kelly including Liverpool

However, Liverpool aren’t the only club interested in Kelly. Tottenham and Newcastle are also reportedly considering mid-season moves for the talented defender.

Kelly’s versatility, being able to play at both center-back and left-back, makes him an attractive prospect for several Premier League clubs.

Urgent Defensive Reinforcement

Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcement has become more pressing this season due to injuries to key players like Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, along with a shortage of full-backs.

Heading into their game against Wolves in September, Liverpool had only two available senior center-backs, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Tottenham’s Renewed Interest

Tottenham had pursued Kelly during the summer transfer window, but their £20 million bid was rejected by Bournemouth.

As a result, they are expected to renew their interest in January, setting the stage for a potential bidding war with Liverpool.

Kelly’s Rising Star Status

Lloyd Kelly, who joined Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2019, has garnered a strong reputation despite being hampered by injuries.

His contract situation at Bournemouth adds to the intrigue, as he could potentially leave on a free transfer if he doesn’t sign a new deal soon.

With Liverpool, Tottenham, and Newcastle all vying for Kelly’s signature, the price tag for the talented defender could escalate beyond the £20 million offered by Spurs in the summer.

Kelly’s left-footedness and ability to play multiple defensive positions make him a valuable commodity in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Lloyd Kelly in the upcoming January transfer window reflects their ongoing efforts to bolster their defensive options, while Tottenham and Newcastle also compete for his signature, making it a storyline to watch as the winter window approaches.

Kelly’s versatility and potential free-agent status add to his appeal, setting the stage for a potentially competitive bidding war.
