Liverpool have been very smart in the recent transfer windows. Not only have Liverpool earned a profit of 98 million Pounds, but have also been one of the only two premier league clubs to make a profit in the last five years.
Liverpool fans are divided when it comes to their club’s transfer strategy. Some fans really like it and appreciate FSG’s transfer planning, while others hate it.
Liverpool’s transfer strategy makes them millions in profit
Some look at it as a lack of ambition or willingness to improve the squad. However, the Liverpool squad is one of the strongest it has ever been, especially with the signing of Luis Diaz, and it is all down to FSG’s planning.
Liverpool have earned their profit by ensuring that the money they spend on players doesn’t go out of the door without having any meaningful returns.
According to football finance expert Swiss Ramble, Liverpool have spent 234.1 million pounds on players, while the return on this has been 321.3 million pounds.
Most of Liverpool’s profit, of course, has come from Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona. The Brazilian was sold for a whopping 142 million pounds in 2018. Liverpool had signed him for only 11.7 million pounds in 2013.
Other profits came from sales of other fringe players. Academy player Rhian Brewster was sold for 23.4 million pounds to Sheffield United in 2020. Dominic Solanke and Harry Wilson left Liverpool for 19.1 million and 17.2 million pounds profit respectively.
In 2019 Danny Ings left Anfield for a 15.1 million pound profit for Southampton. Mamadou Sakho, on the other hand, made a 10.4 million pound profit for Liverpool.
Other sales also include players like Ki-Jana Hoever, Marko Grujic, Taiwon Awoniyi and Ryan Kent.
Out of the 37 departures in the last five years, only 12 of them have left on a loss. Most of them were players like Gini Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana who left after their contracts expired. The combined loss has come to be around £159.5m.
On the other hand, while Liverpool made a profit of 98 million pounds, their rivals made losses. Spurs had £51m loss, while Manchester City made a £ 131.8m loss. Manchester United and Arsenal on the other hand suffered a loss of £192m and £163m respectively.
