With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Jurgen Klopp recently gave an update on Liverpool vice-captain James Milner.

Klopp confirmed that Liverpool are holding talks with the midfielder over a possible new contract. He also added that there’s “no chance” that James Milner will retire this year.

James Milner to extend his stay with the club?

Speaking to the press before the game against Burnley, Klopp said,

There are talks, but as always, we usually don’t comment further on that. There’s no reason for it. But of course, I’m in talks, the club is in talks, with Milly. We will see

At the age of 36, many expected James Milner to hang up his boots at the end of his contract on July 1st. However, Jurgen Klopp put an end to that speculation completely.

He added,

He’s desperate to play on. (…) Milly will be fine after his career as well, but he obviously loves what he is doing and he will play football next year, definitely.

While Klopp did not show any optimism about the confirmation of the deal, the fact that talks have started is a positive sign.

Milner has shown an inclination towards a coaching role though. During the mid-season break, he revealed that he had been working towards his coaching badges. Could this open up a possibility of a dual role at the club?

Milner’s contract isn’t the only one causing Liverpool issues. Mohamed Salah’s contract is also being discussed by the club, while Mane is linked with a move to Barcelona following his contract expiration soon. Firmino’s contract is also set to expire in another eighteen months.

Do you think Milner signing an extension at the club is a good thing for the player and the club? He has made twenty-three appearances for the club this season, could we see him adding to that number next season?
