Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is seeking reinforcements this summer to rebuild his squad for 2023/24. He believes that Liverpool needs to strengthen in central defence if he finds the right player to fit his vision, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.
Midfield options
Liverpool have confirmed two signings in the summer transfer market, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Romeo Lavia, the Southampton star, is also a potential target for Liverpool this summer and he could be very well the next signing for Klopp.
Meanwhile, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona are also interested in Lavia.
Liverpool have also been linked with Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, who has been rebuffed by Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.
Nice midfielder, Khephren Thuram has been linked to Liverpool, and at one point reports claimed that the midfielder has agreed to personal terms.
However, the 22-year-old is no more a target for this summer, as Thuram has decided to continue with Nice for one more season.
Fabrizio Romano on Liverpool transfer prediction
Transfer guru Romano suggests that midfield signings will take precedence, and Liverpool will only enter the market for a central defender if Klopp believes they are the correct fit at Anfield. Romano said:
“But let me say that Liverpool will only do that if they find the right player. They don’t want to put money in a player who is not 100% their important target, so this is the idea.
But again, now the focus is on completing the midfielder and then moving to the new centre-back.”
Klopp eying defenders for Liverpool
Liverpool are currently recruiting midfield reinforcements, but defensive targets are also being linked. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is mentioned as a potential move to Anfield, while Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City are also in contention to sign the England Under-21 international.
The 20-year-old Colwill was quoted by The Times as saying the following about his potential future:
“I’ll speak to my family, speak to everyone I need to and make a decision. I’ve got to play at the end of the day to hopefully get there and go to the next camp.”
Football Insider reports that Torino defender Perr Schuurs is a top target for Klopp, potentially as a cheaper alternative to high-profile recruits.
Liverpool are also admired by Sporting Lisbon ace Goncalo Inacio and Wolfsburg star Micky van de Ven. However, the Dutchman van de Ven looks to be closing on a move to Tottenham and thus the Reds have dropped him from their transfer wishlist.
More details on potential signings will be revealed as the 2023/24 campaign approaches.
