Liverpool and Brighton have agreed a British record fee for midfielder Moises Caicedo, as confirmed by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
The cost is thought to be approximately £111 million, with Caicedo scheduled to go to Liverpool for a medical on Friday. The agreement will also include a sell-on clause.
Brighton set a bid deadline of midnight on Thursday, and if their appraisal was met, they would go with the highest bidder.
Liverpool formally presented their application late Thursday night, after Caicedo expressed interest in moving to Anfield.
According to Sky Sports News, the Reds were in talks with Brighton to determine all of the financial conditions of a deal in case Chelsea couldn’t or wouldn’t strike an agreement.
Liverpool were notified just after midnight that they had won the offer. Personal agreements with Caicedo have been agreed upon, and preparations for all transfer formalities are currently underway.
Chelsea reportedly offered £100 million, but Bayern Munich said they would pay £90 million. Thus, out of all the three clubs, Liverpool were the highest bidder for the Ecuadorian.
Jurgen Klopp on Moises Caicedo to Liverpool
Speaking in the press conference ahead of the Premier League opener against Chelsea, the Merseysider’s boss Jurgen Klopp said:
“I got told I can confirm the Moisés Caicedo deal is agreed with the club.
With the player, we will have to see. Medical today? I can’t tell you, I don’t know.
We give it a go and the club have really stretched it to be honest”
In 2021, Brighton signed Caicedo from Independiente del Valle for just £4.5 million. The midfielder came into the limelight during the 2022-23 PL season.
The 21-year-old had the 2nd most successful tackles and interceptions in the PL 2022-23 campaign. During the course, he also became Ecuador’s youngest scorer at the World Cup.
The Brighton midfielder will cost Liverpool more than £100 million, but in 2016, Klopp had different thoughts about football and the transfer market.
Back in those days, nobody would have believed that the Reds might one day pay a hefty fee of £100 million for a player.
Jurgen Klopp on Man Utd signing Pogba for €100m in 2016:
“The day that this is football, then I’m not in a job anymore.
Other clubs can spend more money and collect top players. I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I had that money.”
However, Klopp has admitted that he was wrong to think so, but our Boss also mentioned that he still dosen’t like it.
This transfer saga really comes as a shocker and has now become one to be talked about in the coming years. While Anfield awaits Caicedo’s welcome, one may question – If we were willing to spend this much was Jude Bellingham far away or does Klopp like Moises more than Jude?
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
