After a difficult season, Xherdan Shaqiri believes Jurgen Klopp can bring Liverpool back to the top. The 31-year-old has labeled his former manager as a “big win” and believes in his abilities.
The Swiss international left Liverpool in August 2021 to join Lyon for about £9.5 million. Since then, he has moved again to play in Major League Soccer (MLS).
During his time at Merseyside, Shaqiri won the Premier League and the Champions League. The Swiss winger also started and assisted in the famous 4-0 win over Barcelona at Anfield in 2019.
Former Liverpool winger has full trusts in Jurgen Klopp
In a recent interview with the Guardian, Shaqiri spoke about his three-year spell at the club. He also insisted that Klopp is the right man to solve the Reds’ problems.
“I believe in Jurgen. I hope he stays as long as possible,”
He said.
“He’s a big win for the club. I think they’re going to be busy in the transfer market [this summer]. But I think it is crucial they make the Champions League so that they can get the players they want.”
The 31-year-old was signed from Stoke in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £13.5 million. The Swiss international immediately told the club’s official website that his aim was to “win titles” for Liverpool.
He did exactly that, winning the Champions League in his first season and then winning the Premier League with the Reds in 2019/20 where they won 26 of their first 27 games.
The Chicago Fire winger remembers his time with Liverpool fondly, despite not making it into Klopp’s regular starting XI.
“I will always look back with a lot of pride. I think what we achieved is amazing,”
he admitted.
“Who will ever forget what we did that night [against Barcelona].”
Shaqiri left Anfield with the club’s best wishes. Since then, he has regestered seven goals and six assists in 31 MLS games.
