Man City’s Legal Battle: Experts Predict Outcomes As Liverpool Wait

Manchester City, who have been accused of 115 violations of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, are awaiting their Premier League hearing date.

While Liverpool waits for a decision, Manchester City will probably have to face a full hearing for their 115 Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations.

The Premier League charged City in February 2023 for violations that mostly concerned their behaviour from 2009 to 2018.

The primary areas of disagreement concerned the financial data they had provided to the league regarding player and management payments.

Additionally, according to the Premier League, City did not fully comply with the ensuing investigation.

The team led by Pep Guardiola has consistently maintained that they are innocent and that they have proof of their innocence.

But despite a protracted delay in scheduling a hearing, the Premier League has not yet considered this evidence.

While the hearing for Man City is anticipated to take place this year, the decision is not anticipated to be made until the summer of 2025.

This has given rise to some conjecture that, in order to avoid any more delays, the Premier League and City may choose to reach an out-of-court settlement.

The concern with this approach is that, given that Everton and Nottingham Forest both had their cases heard through the process, teams like Liverpool and Arsenal are unlikely to believe that justice has been served if a settlement is reached prior to a hearing.

Football finance specialist Kieran Maguire and former City financial advisor Stefan Borson were asked if a settlement is likely to happen on BBC Radio Manchester’s We’re Not Really Here podcast. Maguire added,

“It would certainly save a lot of money on behalf of both sides”

The two men agreed with their statement.

“It could mean that both parties could claim a victory, but I think in terms of public opinion and the reaction there’s likely to be from both the media, and I suspect from other clubs, it’s not really something that would be palatable to the Premier League nor City.”

Borson added:

“There are ways in which it could occur within the Premier League rules.

But I think they missed their window for a settlement. Now that it’s public and now that we’re so close to the hearing, it would be very unlikely for them to find common ground politically to get this settled.”
