Mateo Kovacic to Liverpool or Manchester United

Mateo Kovacic is reportedly in talks with a few PL clubs including Liverpool, as his agents have already landed in the UK to discuss his future.

After a dismal campaign from Chelsea, many players would be axed from the first team and the Croatian looks to be one of them. With his uncertain future, many journalists have reported that other PL clubs have shown interest in the midfielder.

The Croatian arrived at Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid, initially on loan in 2018. However, later the move was made permanent in 2019 for a reported fee of £40m.

He became an integral part of the Blues and went on to win the Champions League under Tuchel as well. But with the new owner who has spent over £200m and has brought in fresh faces, it seems to be a dead end for Kovacic.

Also, his injury record with Chelsea has been poor which has seen him spend a lot of time on the sidelines. He has been in the squad for four different managers in 3 years- Sarri, Lampard, Tuchel, and Potter.

The former Inter Milan player has won the Europa League under Sarri and the Champions League under Tuchel. The 28-year-old was one of the key players for the Blues in recent seasons.

However, with Kovacic entering the final 12 months of his contract with Chelsea, there seems to be little to no progress regarding his extension.

Transfer News: Mateo Kovacic to Liverpool

With his future not tied to the club and 1 year left on his deal, some of the PL clubs are monitoring the situation.

Liverpool monitoring Kovacic

As per 90min, the player’s agents have flown to England to hold talks with a few clubs interested in him. Liverpool, Man City, and Man Utd are said to be the clubs who have shown interest in the midfielder.

It has been reported that the talks have been scheduled with the other clubs already with talks at Chelsea stalling.

It has been known that Klopp is looking to overhaul his midfield for the next season. Moreover, the club has been showing interest in many other midfielders. Fellow Chelsea teammate, Mount, Brighton’s Mac Allister, and Palhinho, are a few top targets.

However, Pep has always been an admirer of Kovacic’s talent. This would mean that the Sky Blues would enter the race to sign the Croatian as well.

Even after spending a lot of money this season, the Blues would not shy away from spending the big bucks again for the next season. But this would also mean that a lot of players in the Chelsea camp would be shown the exit door.

It has been reported that Conor Gallagher could also be one of them. Moreover, Liverpool have the Englishman on their radar as well.

How would the Croatian fare for Liverpool?

The Croatian has multiple Champions League trophies with both English and Spanish capital clubs. However, he wasn’t a regular at Madrid as his national teammate, Modric was the main man.

But since moving to Chelsea, he has been an important player and has won both the European trophies in London.

He has 217 appearances and is a perfect box-to-box midfielder and with his superb technical abilities, he could be a handful.

Since the Reds are looking for experienced first-team players, the Chelsea man could be their answer. He has adapted to the PL and would be a good fit for Klopp and his squad.
