PL legend turned pundit Alan Shearer has passed his verdict on where Liverpool will finish in the PL by the end of this season, which is promising.
With the emphatic 4-2 victory against Newcastle United on Sunday night, the Reds solidified their foothold at the top of the PL points table. After 20 matches, they top the table with 45 points, 3 points clear off of 2nd-placed Aston Villa.
The delicate form of the Merseysiders has helped them win 13 of the 20 clashes so far, drawing only 6. The only loss they suffered was in the controversial match against Tottenham Hotspurs. Their fine has also continued in the UEL.
They are one of the favourites to win both the PL and the UEL if they continue to show this level of intensity and quality until the end of the season.
Alan Shearer predicts where Liverpool will finish in PL
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer has agreed with other expert opinions on the Anfield giants’ future. He stated,
“They are going the distance. There is no doubt about it, they are going the distance. They will be right up there come the last weekend of the season. They are a really good team.
Van Dijk is back to his best, Trent is having a great time, they have an unbelievable goalkeeper and when you have the brilliance of Mo Salah you have every chance.
They have game changers which can do that coming off the bench, they have so many options.”
The former England international is not entirely wrong. Virgil van Dijk averages 1.4 tackles and 1.3 interceptions in PL, and Trent Alexander-Arnold averages 1.4 tackles and 1.2 interceptions, alongside a 79% pass completion rate.
On the other hand, Alisson has kept 6 clean sheets while conceding only 14 goals. Mohamed Salah has been excellent this season, with 14 goals and 8 assists (stats via WhoScored).
Although the exemplary form of LFC is not under threat anytime soon, they should work on a few aspects. The attack and midfield look more than enough this season, but they need to sign some defenders.
Joel Matip, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are already out due to injury. Another injury in the defensive unit can crush Klopp and Co.’s hopes of winning any title this season. The winter transfer window can help Liverpool gain an edge over other clubs.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
