Liverpool failed to sign Moises Caicedo after bidding a British record fee of £110m only for the player to reject a move to Anfield and move to Chelsea.
This transfer saga of Caicedo was like none other with so many twists and turns on the way. Finally, Chelsea outbid Liverpool’s record bid after the player made it clear that he only wants to move to Stamford Bridge.
Recently, Fabrizio Romano has reported on an interaction that best shows Chelsea’s pull on the player.
After a tough start to the transfer window by missing out on Bellingham, the Reds bounced back by signing two exciting prospects.
While even after signing Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, the Reds weren’t able to do much in the window.
However, they made a shocking bid for Caicedo, which was agreed by Brighton. But after personal terms being rejected and Caicedo choosing Chelsea, the deal broke down.
Moises Caicedo only wanted Chelsea and it was never Liverpool
The Ecuadorian told he only wanted to join Chelsea, having agreed on personal terms with them for over a month.
“I JUST WANT CHELSEA, THANKS AGAIN.” – Sadi Caicedo.
He even said that he grew up as a fan of the club which was the major factor in choosing the London club.
This was the main sentiment that resonated amongst fans as they soaked in the fact that he was better off at Chelsea than at Liverpool.
After all, what better than to play for the badge than the money? And that is what the fans least expect from their heroes.
However, it wasn’t just Caicedo as what followed next shattered the Reds’ faithful. The long-term target, Romeo Lavia, who was destined to work under Klopp at Liverpool, chose Chelsea too.
After three Liverpool bids being rejected by Southampton, Chelsea took the opportunity to outbid the Reds. They swooped in for both of Klopp’s targets in their yet another spending spree season.
This has also underlined the crucial aspect of modern football. The power of player agency, sentiments, and personal aspirations could overturn most lucrative deals.
