‘He is horrendous’: Steve Nicol suggests that the club is better off without former Liverpool striker

Former Liverpool defender turned pundit Steve Nicol has shared his hot take regarding another former Red, striker Divock Origi.

The mighty Reds have been one of the biggest names in club football for quite a few decades. Thus, dominating the Pre-Premier League era in which the last title glory came in the 1989-90 season.

And the recent glories for the club came in 2019 when they won the Champions League in the 2018-19 season.

Another moment, potentially more special, was becoming the Premier League champion in the 2019-20.

Meanwhile, one of the players who is under-appreciated for his part has been Divock Origi. The striker was an important piece of Jurgen Klopp’s setup back then.

However, pundit Steve Nicol who was an integral part of Bob Paisley’s team that ruled during the 1980s, has different views on him.

Speaking about the Belgian international on ESPNFC, the former Red said,

“Did he score a goal? Yes, he did. That’s what the guy did at Liverpool. He never saw the field until the last 5-10 minutes, and yes, he had a habit of scoring big goals.

But I tell you what, in open play, he was horrendous. And in that final (against Tottenham), he was horrendous as well, even though he scored a goal.

For a guy who is about 6ft 1, he can’t head a ball to save his life. He couldn’t hold a bag of cement if you played it up to him.

He couldn’t pass a ball to someone with the same colour of jersey on. And he can’t head the ball. But he scored a goal in the final! His actual play is garbage.”

This is obviously not all true. The 28-year-old is definitely not up there with Ian Rush, Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez, or Roberto Firmino.

But the Belgian striker showed much promise and offered much more which made Klopp pick him whenever crucial time came for the Merseyside giants.

So discarding his abilities and his contributions towards Liverpool‘s glory would just be a hasty act.
