Shock Cuts! Southgate Axes Two Liverpool Stars from Euro 2024 Squad!

Southgate is set to announce his final selections by Saturday, leaving both Liverpool players disappointed.

The Euro 2024 tournament is approaching soon. England manager Southgate will face a tough decision in finalizing his squad.

Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah were included in the provisional 33-player squad. They are now expected to miss out on the final 26-player team.

The Times’ Paul Joyce reported that Jones ‘has been told he won’t make England’s final selection,’ with Quansah also anticipated to be excluded.

Their omissions are significant, given their surprise call-ups to the initial squad. However, their exclusion from the final squad is not the main story dominating the headlines.

That distinction belongs to James Maddison, who has already left the England camp for unspecified reasons.

Southgate had previously expressed enthusiasm for both Jones and Quansah. Speaking to England’s YouTube channel he said,

“We saw enough through the season to be excited about what he (Jones) might be able to do and what he can bring to the group.”

Of Quansah, he said:

“Jarell had a super season with Liverpool, I mean you’ve only got to see the games that his manager picked him for.

He was in the team and a couple of other high-profile players weren’t in that position, so that was a sign of how well Jurgen (Klopp) thought he was doing.”

Southgate Drop Liverpool Duo

Neither Jones nor Quansah featured in England’s recent 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia & Herzegovina.

This match highlighted the performances of other Liverpool players, particularly Trent Alexander-Arnold. He was exceptionally good in the two-man midfield alongside Conor Gallagher.

England’s set-up was 4-2-3-1 shape. Trent grew into the game perfectly. Cole Palmer opened the scoring after a very tough first half.

Then Joe Gomez came off the bench with 17 minutes to play and Trent shifted to the right-back for the closing minutes.

Soon he made it 2-0 with a brilliant volley in the 85th minute. He peeled off his marker to accept Jack Grealish’s cross and shoot a perfect volley into the bottom corner.

Considering England’s defensive challenges Gomez may secure a place in the final squad, though confirmation will come after Southgate’s official announcement.
