Mason Mount may now be on his way to join Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, but the Chelsea midfielder reportedly fancied a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool initially.
As per LondonFirst, Liverpool were the 24-year-old’s first choice destination this summer. However, things did not turn out the way it was expected and the Englishman is on his way to join Man Utd.
“Liverpool was Mount’s preferred option and Fewings was known to have good connections inside Liverpool.
It is understood though that Manchester United offered the best financial package and it could be the case that Liverpool also had troubles in negotiations with Mount’s side, but this is just a theory.”
The report stated
Reports have stated that the Red Devils would be paying an initial £55 million to Chelsea. After being sidelined due to injury last season, Mount is set to revive his career under Ten Hag.
Mount has made 129 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The midfielder has scored 27 goals and given 22 assists in those games.
Blow for Liverpool to not go for Mason Mount?
Now that the midfielder is heading to Manchester, Liverpool did get a better deal. With all due respect, Mount is a quality player but due to a terrible previous season, many fans feel that the PL club overpaid for his services.
Also, getting the World Cup winner, Mac Allister for a mere £35m is a steal in itself. Moreover, to add to that, Klopp’s side have signed the brilliant Hungarian, Dominik Szoboszlai. It is reported to be a whooping €70m.
With the Reds still chasing Thuram, Kone, and Veiga, it might still turn out to be a blockbuster summer. However, the Reds’ faithful are convinced that their team is replacing the outgoing players with younger ones.
But it’s still to be seen whether the new signings would fit in the squad and perform as per expectations.
