West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has commented on Liverpool pursuing Kylian Mbappe, saying it will not come to fruition.
The rumours of the Merseysiders having interest in PSG attacker Kylian Mbappe have surfaced many times recently. The English side has been a long-time admirer of the 25-year-old.
The Anfield Giants tried to sign him in 2017 when he was still a young prodigy at Monaco. But PSG swooped in by quickly paying €180m and securing his services.
However, things have been pretty tumultuous for the last few months between the Frenchman and the Ligue 1 side. Thus, a free transfer this summer has become inevitable; that is where Liverpool comes in.
Michail Antonio says Liverpool will not sign Kylian Mbappe
Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, the West Ham United striker asked the host of the show,
“I’m going to ask you a question: I don’t want the Liverpool fans firing shots. I’m going to ask you a question, you’re going to answer it and then I’m going to answer. Can Liverpool pay the salary?”
Host Rickie Haywood-Williams replied,
“I don’t know the finances of FSG. But if you go by the model in which Liverpool do their business, it’s just not what we do. We buy players on the cusp of becoming great and they get moulded by Klopp. We don’t buy the finished article. As much as I would love Kylian Mbappe at Liverpool, surely he’s going to Real Madrid.”
Antonio continued his explanation by saying,
“That’s exactly what I was going to say. If he’s going anywhere, it will be Real Madrid. If he’s coming to the Premier League, it’s going to be Man City. They are the only two clubs that are going to be paying the wages. There is no-one else.
They [Liverpool] put £100m down for Caicedo, but I’m not talking about the fee. I’m talking wages. The guy is coming on a free. Wherever he lands, I’m saying nothing less than £500,000 a week. I feel he is going to leave PSG.”
Signing Mbappe will go entirely against the club policy of LFC. They rely upon signing promising talents who are yet to achieve the greatness, but the French international does not fit the prototype.
So Liverpool should withdraw from this pursuit and explore other options.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
