The managerial drama of Liverpool has taken a surprising turn as discussions with Sporting manager Ruben Amorim have heated up and Barcelona has backed out of the race.
Now, with Xabi Alonso ruling him out for Liverpool’s managerial role, the Reds’ attention is swiftly moving towards Amorim. David Ornstein revealed in The Athletic,
“He is very much in the frame for Liverpool – not Barcelona – and conversations have taken place.”
This statement resonates with reports from various news outlets, including SPORT, indicating that Barcelona have shifted their attention from Amorim as of now.
Race for Amorim: Barcelona Out, Liverpool In?
Despite external opinions positioning Amorim as the top target for Liverpool, Ornstein suggested that the situation may differ internally.
He pointed out Liverpool’s tendency towards a meticulous selection process rather than a definitive preference for one single candidate.
There is a lot of debate regarding the cost of signing Amorim from Sporting. Ornstein suggested an estimated value of the release clause of approximately £8.5 million.
Also, Paulo Barreira has drawn attention as a key member of Amorim’s staff. He is well known for his expertise in injury prevention and conditioning. Last but not least, he has ties to Liverpool.
Liverpool are going through a big organisational change currently. The recent appointment of Richard Hughes as sporting director and Michael Edwards’ transition to the CEO role in football are indicating a new start all over.
The club has also strengthened its staff with the recruitment of a new opposition analyst, Jansen Moreno. Also, negotiations with Benfica for technical director Pedro Marques are also in progress.
Marques and Edwards will likely be less involved with Liverpool on a day-to-day basis as FSG looks into multi-club ownership.
While discussions about his potential impact at Anfield are going on, Amorim’s proactiveness is what stands out. Portuguese football journalist Tom Kundert spoke highly of This Is Anfield:
“He’s been absolutely brilliant since he’s been at Sporting. “You cannot really kind of overstate the impact which he’s had.
If you just look at his record, he’s almost been a bit of a miracle worker. Importantly, too, his side are defensively very solid.”
Initially, Barcelona was considered to be in the race for Amorim, as they too are in search of a new coach after Xavi announced his potential departure during the summer.
Now that they are apparently out of the race, the possibility of Amorim filling Klopp’s shoes looms large.
