In a summer of transfer twists and turns, Liverpool might finally strike gold with Porto’s midfield magician, Alan Varela.

After a season without high profile signing in the defensive midfield position, Wataru Endo has admirably held the fort. Yet, with the departures of Fabinho and former captain Jordan Henderson, the Reds are still in urgent need of a long-term solution.

Alan Varela, the Argentine midfielder is currently a Porto player. Liverpool’s interest in Varela is nothing new. Various sources are indicating that the Reds were keen on him last summer. But he eventually moved to Porto for a modest fee of less than €10 million.

Now taking advantage of Porto’s financial issues, Liverpool might seize the opportunity to finally Varela to Anfield.

Why Varela for Liverpool?

Despite his relatively slight frame compared to traditional bruisers like Fabinho, Varela’s style of play has drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Rodri. He blends tenacity with finesse, a combination missed by Liverpool’s midfield for a long.

The statistics speak for itself – 155 appearances, 4 goals, 7 assists. His current market value stands at €25 million. But given Porto’s financial condition, Liverpool might be able to negotiate a deal of around €40 million.

Luck was not with Liverpool in the transfer market recently. Chelsea snatched Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia from under their noses. The fanbase is anxious for a win.

The return of Michael Edwards as Sporting CEO and Richard Hughes as Sporting Director has ignited a fresh hope for shrewd acquisitions. Replacing Fabinho is the top priority of Liverpool and Varela can be the man for the job.

However, there is a catch – Varela’s physicality. Unlike Fabinho or Atalanta’s Ederson, Varela’s game depends on his intelligence and positioning rather than sheer force.

Under the new coach, Arne Slot Liverpool are likely to shift their style towards a more measured, tactical approach. Varela’s skill set may be a perfect match for this setup.
