What James Pearce has heard from Liverpool this morning about the transfer development at Anfiled

Transfer Update: Leny Yoro to Liverpool

Liverpool are in the hunt for French center-back Leny Yoro, but the road to securing his signature is fraught with challenges.

The talented 18-year-old from Lille has caught the attention of top European clubs, with Real Madrid emerging as his preferred destination. Despite this, Liverpool remains hopeful, ready to step in if the deal with Madrid falls through.

James Pearce reported that Yoro is keen on moving to the Bernabeu.

“Liverpool target Leny Yoro informed Real Madrid that he wants to move to the Bernabeu. The 18-year-old French center-back is happy with the personal terms on offer but a fee has yet to be agreed between the clubs as Lille hold out for around €60m,”

Pearce wrote for The Athletic.

Liverpool have long anticipated that Real Madrid would lead the race for Yoro. However, the Reds view Yoro as a unique market opportunity given his age, talent, potential, and contract situation.

With his contract expiring next summer, Madrid are hesitant to finalize the deal quickly, leaving a glimmer of hope for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s Plan B: Riccardo Calafiori

While Liverpool waits for developments on Yoro, another name has surfaced as a potential target: Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian international, also a promising talent, seems to be overlooked despite being a more experienced option.

It’s puzzling why Liverpool hasn’t turned more of their focus toward Calafiori. With similar potential costs involved, the Italian could be a solid alternative, ticking many boxes for Liverpool’s defensive needs. The Reds’ interest in Yoro is understandable, but Calafiori presents an equally compelling case.

What’s Next for Liverpool?

As the summer transfer window heats up, Liverpool’s strategy remains fluid. They acknowledge that securing a center-back is not a top priority at the moment. Yet, if the opportunity to sign a generational talent like Yoro presents itself, Liverpool wants to be ready.

For now, all eyes are on Real Madrid’s negotiations with Lille. Should the deal fall apart, Liverpool are poised to make their move. Meanwhile, the possibility of pursuing Calafiori remains an intriguing alternative.
