Jurgen Klopp commended centre-back Jarell Quansah for his response after a crucial error that contributed to Liverpool dropping points in the Premier League title race against Manchester United.
Liverpool drew 2-2 at Old Trafford, putting them level on points with Arsenal but behind on goal difference.
Luis Diaz scored for Liverpool in the first half, but they should have had a bigger lead at halftime.
In the 49th minute, the home team levelled the score following Quansah’s error, which led to Bruno Fernandes scoring from a distance.
This shifted the momentum in favour of United, who then took the lead in the 67th minute courtesy of Kobbie Mainoo.
However, Liverpool secured a point after Harvey Elliott was fouled by Aaron Wan-Bissaka inside the penalty area. Mo Salah converted the resulting penalty with just seven minutes left in the game.
Jarell Quansah at Liverpool
Quansah has been outstanding this season, marking his 27th appearance against United. Klopp recognizes his promising future but anticipates some defensive mistakes.
The Liverpool manager told reporters at his post-match press conference,
“Look, as a professional football player – [and] he will play in the Premier League, he will play for Liverpool – I have the bad news: it will not be his last mistake, unfortunately, but that’s how life is.
I thought he handled it well, and the team responded effectively. It’s part of the game—part of football. Despite the setback, mistakes happen, and Bruno capitalized on the opportunity. No blame or criticism; it’s a learning experience.
The boys coped admirably with the situation. Maintaining possession and playing our style of football is paramount. Bruno seized the chance and made the most of it. There’s no fault or criticism here; it’s all about learning and improving.
In football, setbacks occur, but it’s how we respond that matters. Our focus remains on playing our game and retaining possession. Bruno’s decision was opportunistic, and there’s no blame attached. It’s an opportunity for growth and learning.”
