In an official statement, Liverpool Football Club has confirmed that Jorg Schmadtke will be stepping down from his role as sporting director in the coming month.
Schmadtke took on the position last summer as he replaced Julian Ward, who had a brief one-year stint as the successor to the highly respected Michael Edwards.
During his tenure at Liverpool, Schmadtke played a crucial role in steering the team through a bustling transfer window.
Among the notable signings under his guidance were Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
The club also witnessed the departure of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League.
It’s important to note that Schmadtke initially inked a short-term deal with Liverpool. However, with the recent surprising announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure from the Anfield managerial role at the end of the season, along with assistant managers Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, and elite development coach Vitor Mato, Schmadtke’s exit is now slated for the conclusion of the January transfer window.
Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon expressed his gratitude towards Schmadtke, recognizing the significant role he played since joining Liverpool last summer.
Gordon commended Schmadtke’s support for Klopp and the valuable guidance provided to the football operations department.
As Jorg Schmadtke prepares to bid farewell, Liverpool extends their appreciation for his contributions and sends their best wishes to him and his family for the future.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
