‘…Not Under Consideration…’: Journalist Shares Liverpool Will Not Hire This PL Coach!
The Athletic journalist James Pearce has unveiled that Liverpool will not be hiring Wolverhampton Wonderers boss Gary O’Neil as Jurgen Klopp replacement.
The managerial search of the Merseyside giants has entered even more murky waters with the update of their prime target Ruben Amorim being in talks with West Ham United for a potential takeover as the Irons boss.
After Xabi Alonso‘s announcement of committing to the Bayer Leverkusen job for the coming few seasons, Amorim had been the top contender to succeed outbound Jurgen Klopp on the Anfield throne.
But the recent update has made the club officials reconsider all the previous options as well as some new options.
The shortlist for the potential candidates to replace the current Reds boss consists of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi, Lille’s Paulo Fonseca, Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and currently free manager Niko Kovac.
Gary O’Neil Is No Fit For Liverpool
Amid all the speculations, a name which has surprisingly come up is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Gary O’Neil.
Earlier reports had suggested that the former Liverpool youth academy coach was being interviewed by the top officials of the Anfield side.
However, according to a new update by journalist James Pearce of The Athletic, that did not come to any fruition as the Englishman is out of contention for the Merseyside job.
“Gary O’Neil is not under consideration for the #LFC job.”
James Pearce wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
The decision to stay away from hiring an unproven manager is because of O’Neil’s track record.
The 40-year-old started his managerial career only four years ago in 2020 with him starting as the assistant to Barry Lewtas of the Liverpool U-23 side.
After only half a season, O’Neil moved on to become the assistant coach of Bournemouth in the winter of 2021. By the summer of 2022, he was given the baton of ‘Caretaker Manager’ of the Cherries.
Months later after this, he became the full-time manager of the Dorset side. After being in charge of the club for a full season, O’Neil joined Wolves as their full-time manager last summer.
The English manager is yet to prove his worth by winning some silverware. So the decision by the Anfield officials not to consider O’Neil is right because they will need to hire a proven winner who will effortlessly continue the legacy left behind by Jurgen Klopp.
