Former Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia has expressed his confidence in Kostas Tsimikas stepping up to the plate in the absence of the first-choice left-back, Andy Robertson, who is sidelined due to injury.
Hyypia believes that the 27-year-old Greek footballer will now have an opportunity to showcase his abilities and hopes he seizes the chance courageously.
He acknowledges that if Tsimikas doesn’t perform well, Jurgen Klopp may need to consider alternative solutions to the problem.
Sami Hyypia on Tsimikas
Hyypia’s faith in Tsimikas stems from the Greek player’s past performances and potential.
“I think he [Tsimikas] will get a lot of responsibility now and he has his chance to show what kind of player he is. Hopefully, he is courageous and takes his chance. If that is not going to work then Jurgen needs to think of something else to solve the problem but I have confidence in Tsimikas that he can do the job.”
Said Sami Hyypia at an LFC Foundation event via RTE.
While Tsimikas had been considered a strong contender to replace Robertson in previous seasons, some doubts about his quality have arisen over time.
The Perfect Robertson replacement?
Tsimikas’ recent performance in the Merseyside Derby was less than convincing, and he was substituted with half an hour remaining.
Although it wasn’t a disastrous display, it did create some anxiety among Liverpool fans.
Despite this, Tsimikas has demonstrated his potential to be a valuable player for Liverpool in the past, and Hyypia believes that he can regain that form.
The upcoming match against Toulouse may provide an opportunity for Tsimikas to regain his rhythm and earn more playing time.
However, it remains to be seen whether Klopp will choose to start him in the match, or if he will opt to protect the player to some extent.
The English club will welcome the French Club at Anfield this Thursday night for their 3rd Europa League clash this season.
