The news of Liverpool legend Gerrard has sparked speculations that the Reds’ captain, Jordan Henderson would join his former teammate at his new club.
It is no surprise that the former England international attracts Liverpool players wherever he goes. The same was the case with former Reds’ defender, Jon Flanagan when Gerrard was appointed Ranger’s boss. Similar to follow suit was Coutinho when Gerrard managed Aston Villa.
However, Danny Murphy said that he would be ‘really surprised’ if Klopp would let Hendo join Gerrard in Saudi.
As per The Daily Mail, Gerrard could once again be picking one of his best former teammates again in Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool captain replaced Steven Gerrard as Liverpool captain after his exit in 2015.
Since then, despite a lot of criticism, the 33-year-old successor has been one of the best captains for the Merseysiders. He has won everything for Liverpool at club level. However, despite his poor performances last season, one might think that he is still in Klopp’s ranks.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson a target for Gerrard?
After being appointed the new head coach of the Saudi side, Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard is looking at potential signings. His first target is his former Liverpool teammate, Jordan Henderson.
Murphy, however, cannot envisage Liverpool letting their longest-serving player go. While Jurgen Klopp is in the midst of an overdue midfield overhaul, Henderson’s experience and enduring influence on and off the pitch could be integral as Liverpool looks to bridge the gap between the old era and the new one.
“(Henderson leaving) would surprise me. Unless (there is) an honest conversation with Jurgen Klopp about the amount of games he is going to play or not.
Jordan still looks physically brilliant. He still looks like he’s got loads to give. He would still be in my Liverpool first XI, 100 per cent. Absolutely 100 per cent.
I’d be really surprised (if he joined Gerrard in Saudi Arabia).”
Reds’ captain to stay despite former teammate’s interest?
After bidding farewell to a number of players this summer, Liverpool cannot afford to lose their longest-serving player. At least not in the same window of letting go of Firmino, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Keita, Milner, Arthur, and Carvalho.
With the Saudi clubs getting many elite European players, Thiago is also said to be a target. Despite singing young and dynamic players this summer, Klopp cannot afford to lose the captain.
His influence in the dressing room is vital and a player with that amount of experience is worth having in the squad for as long as possible.
