Former PL striker Chris Sutton thinks Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was not up to the mark in their opening game against Chelsea.
The Merseysiders have been wrestling with Chelsea for the last few weeks in the transfer market. And the London side has emerged victorious in that battle.
As the Blues hijacked Reds’ target Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, the PL opener at Stamford Bridge was their chance to get back to them.
But that also did not go along the plan as the Anfield giants drew 1-1 against the team in blue.
Liverpool clearly faced the lack of a physical midfielder, as Klopp played 4 attackers. However, the frontline looked quite harmless except for the Luis Diaz goal in the first half.
Chris Sutton criticizes Liverpool forward Jota
Manager Jurgen Klopp started with a 4-2-1-3. Salah and Jota are on the wings, Gakpo on the no.10 position and Jota up top.
But he did not have much impact throughout the game. Former PL striker Chris Sutton was so disappointed with his performance that he even went on to say he was ‘awful’.
While speaking on BBC Radio Five Live’s Fantasy 606 Podcast, Sutton said,
“Yeah I was a bit disappointed with him at the weekend, he was awful and I was glad he got hooked off.
I like Jota though, I’m going to stick with him, I am going to stick with Jota.”
Although the Portuguese international was not much effective in the game, there is a reason why the German coach decided to put him before Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo.
The 26-year-old has proven himself in the pre-season games. He scored 4 goals and assisted 4 in just 5 pre-season.
So criticizing him this early in the season will be a little too arrogant. However, he might have to constantly prove himself to beat the competition and ensure a starting position in the teamsheet.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
