Liverpool travels to Madrid on Tuesday night for their clash against Atletico in the UCL. The Reds will be looking to avenge their Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, who had knocked Liverpool out of the Round of 16 back in 2019 – 20.

The Reds will be high on confidence after their 0-5 away win over Watford on Saturday. They will look to carry on the same mindset going into this clash but a tough challenge awaits them.

Atletico Madrid have been a bogey side that possesses great threat. A win for Klopp’s men will ensure one foot in the knockout stage.

Liverpool meet Atletico in UCL: 5 things to know before the clash

Here are 5 important things you should know about this clash.

  1. Atletico the current force in Spain

Barcelona and Real Madrid may appear dull now. This shows that Atletico Madrid remains one of the best sides in Europe. They rightfully won the La Liga title last season. Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez scored the final goal on the last day. Thus, he looked in great shape and a real threat for the Reds defence line.

Atletico are fourth in La Liga and cannot be written off as they are one of the biggest title contenders.

2. Who will Liverpool miss in this clash?

Harvey Elliott will be an absentee for a long time. Midfielders Thiago and Curtis Jones will also be aside, which adds to Klopp’s worry. This will test Liverpool’s squad ahead of their clash against Manchester United this weekend as well.

Jones may be fit for the weekend, which makes him skip the Atletico clash. While Diogo Jota looks to be available. In addition, Alisson and Fabinho are back too after missing the Watford clash due to international duty.

3. This stadium is special to Liverpool

A night that Liverpool fans can never forget. Thus, despite their woes against Atletico, their home Wanda Metropolitano remains to be one of the favourites for The Reds. Thus, the Champions League title win in 2019 over Tottenham are still fresh in the memories of Liverpool fans.

4. Klopp’s respect for Atletico Madrid

On Monday, Jurgen Klopp Praised Atletico in the press conference. He said:

Beating Atletico twice means you are mostly through, but we lost twice to them last time.

I cannot respect them more, I do not really like it but that is me. It has to be successful and they are, they are likely to be La Liga champions again.

5. Did you know?

Liverpool has an impressive form right now. One thing to watch out for is their unbeaten run. Their unbeaten run counts to 20 matches across all competitions and this is their longest under Klopp.

It all began when Trent Alexander-Arnold netted in a late goal at empty Anfield against Aston Villa. Since 1996 under Roy Evans, no Liverpool side has had such an unbeaten run, this team just keeps breaking records.
