Andy Robertson could probably be out of the Liverpool squad for a month or even the rest of 2023 with one factor set to decide that in the next 24 hours.
The Scotland captain is now on his way back to Anfield, cutting his national duties soon. He is due for scans after an injury to his shoulder while playing against Spain on Thursday night.
The Liverpool left-back appears to have sustained a dislocated shoulder after a painful looking challenge with Spain’s goalkeeper in Seville. The weight of Unai Simon went through Robertson’s right shoulder. In fact, he was in discomfort immediately and left the field seemingly in pain.
Robertson to be sidelined for Liverpool for the rest of the year?
After the match Scotland manager Steve Clarke told the reporters about Robertson’s condition.
“It was an immediate decision to take him off, he’ll go back to his club, he’ll be assessed. We’ll see how it is, see how it settles down and hopefully he’s good for his club as quickly as possible and he’s ready to help us in November.”
Although his words give an optimistic view of the injury, the player might be sidelined for months together, if surgery is required. This would surely be a huge blow for Liverpool with the hectic Premier League calendar in December. Moreover, he has been one of their best players this season, apart from Salah.
Moreover, the injury has been explained by an injury specialist @physioscout. He said that Robertson’s treatment would depend on ‘shoulder stability’. He further added that the best case scenario for his recovery would be 2 to 4 weeks, and the worst being 3 to 4 months.
“If there is confirmation of a shoulder dislocation and the non-surgical route is taken, there is further risk of re-injury and a reoccurrence of the same injury.
Scans needed to assess the stability of the shoulder joint and whether surgery is necessary.”
What does the injury mean to the Reds?
If Robertson is to be ruled out for weeks, he could miss up to 7 Liverpool matches. However, if he would be ruled out for the remainder of the calendar year, it would get worse for Liverpool with him missing 17 games.
But Liverpool could still rely on their second choice, left-back Kostas Tsimikas. Hence, Klopp will need to turn towards his Greek defender to fill in for Andy Robertson.
However, the German also needs to hope that Kostas would return from the international break without an injury. Tsimikas has made four appearances so far this season and was an unused substitute in the other seven.
