Pundit Paul Merson has expressed his dissatisfaction in the ongoing contract dilemma of Liverpool, criticising them as ‘pathetic’.
The month of December has arrived and the Reds are yet to finalize any decision regarding the contract extensions of skipper Virgil van Dijk, talisman Mohamed Salah, and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.
With almost a perfect start to the 2024-25 season, despite Arne Slot freshly taking charge of the side after Jurgen Klopp’s departure, the Anfield giants have the greatest chances of securing the PL and UCL title.
As the winter transfer window will start within a month, the Liverpool trio, bound towards running out of contract, will be able to sign pre-contract agreements with any European side from January 1.
Many European giants are meticulously monitoring the contract situation over Merseyside and must be celebrating the lack of initiative of the LFC officials.

Paul Merson criticizes Liverpool contract stance
The amount inactivity regarding this serious issue has enraged fans and pundits alike. Criticising the Merseyside club’s stance, Sky Sports pundit Merson labelled Liverpool decision-makers ‘pathetic’.
In his column for Sportskeeda, the former Arsenal man wrote,
“What is happening at Liverpool is a joke, in footballing terms it’s criminal.
The people in charge who are letting three of their best players run down their contracts like this should take a look at themselves because it is pathetic!
This situation should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago or something.”
As reports suggest, Mohamed Salah’s camp and the club officials are in negotiations and something positive might come once the terms are agreed.
For Virgil van Dijk, he has made it clear that he wants to continue his Anfield career so an agreement can be expected soon.
However, Trent’s contract situation still remains uncertain as his intentions has not been clarified by any parties and we’ll have to wait to know what lies in the future.
