Newcastle United could possibly rival Liverpool in the winter transfer window to sign the Reds target Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners to replace Sandro Tonali.
The Merseysiders despite having an extensive midfield rebuild this summer, are still lacking a firm defensive midfield player. Although Wataru Endo is there in the squad, he is still not the first choice no. 6.
And to fill that gap in the squad, the Anfield giants are exploring several options in the transfer market. And Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners has appeared as a viable option for the club.
The club has been keeping an eye on the Dutchman for quite some time now. The Reds apparently reached out to the Italian club in January and in May but nothing came to a conclusion.
And they can again go for him in January but there is a twist.
Liverpool and Newcastle to battle for Teun Koopmeiners
The Saudi-owned club will be missing Sandro Tonali as he has picked up a suspension till August 2024 due to him placing bets on football matches while playing for AC Milan and Brescia. As a result, Eddie Howe will try signing a new defensive midfielder.
They are already scouting Kalvin Phillips, Conor Gallagher, and Ruben Neves as a potential replacement for the Italian international.
And according to a new report via Tuttomercatoweb, the Tyneside club will try to acquire the services of the 25-year-old midfielder.
The report also suggested that the Magpies would want him on a loan deal with a possible option to buy.
Moreover, the report also added that the Serie-A side have set a price tag of £48M on Koopmeiners. So for LFC to secure this deal, they will have to act fast and submit a bid before Newcastle does.
However, the Anfield giants are prioritizing signing Brazilian midfielder Andre Trindade. If that prospect does not work out, then Koopmeiners can be a decent alternative.
