Wolves have defeated Liverpool in the race to sign 21-year-old Joao Gomes for £15m.

Joao Gomes’ arrival at Wolves was revealed on Monday. He joins in what the Athletic claim is a £15 million deal that took some time to arrange correctly.

For that money, they receive a highly regarded 21-year-old midfielder. As teams appeared to be lining up to recruit him last year, his former boss Paulo Sousa described him as “special.”

One of those was supposedly Liverpool. Coluna mentioned the Reds do Fla as potential bidders. And Joao Gomes himself spoke about the Reds.

He spoke to ESPN Brasil:

“Liverpool is a team I would play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and my family’s, my biggest dream in football.”

Joao Gomes has joined Wolves over Liverpool

Instead, he goes to Wolves. However, the decision could still have an impact on Liverpool.

Although Gomes won’t be moving to Liverpool, this might spur one or two transfers. Wolves are bringing in a great midfielder, so perhaps they’re getting ready to let some players go.

Two Wolves midfielders have, in fact, been mentioned in relation to Liverpool. The first is Nunes, who seems to be the most likely signee. The Telegraph recently made that assertion, but they are not alone.

Links involving Nunes go back to the summer he was a Sporting player. Although Liverpool could not sign him this month due to contractual obligations (the midfielder has already played for two clubs this season), a summer transfer seems likely.

However, Ruben Neves is one player whose transfer might occur this month. According to a story in The Mirror, Liverpool is interested in signing Joao Gomes there. The arrival of the Brazilian at Molineux undoubtedly makes it possible.
