Liverpool are on their way to make an opening offer to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton. The club made him their next priority after two successful signings. Their actions might help Newcastle United to sign one of the targets of Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds had a disappointing and underwhelming 2022-23 season. They finished 5th and missed the chance to qualify and play in the UEFA Champions League. As a result, the Anfield giants will have to compete in the Europa League.
This is the lowest position Liverpool have ever finished in a full season managed by Jurgen Klopp. And most of the blame goes to the aging and out-of-focus midfield that lacked the spark and desire which caused the team a season.
The club had to let go of some players in this summer’s transfer window which helped them to free up some wages. Moreover, the Merseysiders have been pretty ruthless in doing transfer business.
Liverpool signed Alexis Mac Allister who become the first signing of the season. He acquired the no. 10 kit vacated by the Senegalese Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane. The Reds also signed Dominik Szoboszlai who claimed the iconic no. 8 shirt, previously owned by Naby Keita and club legend Steven Gerrard.
The Merseyside giants secured the two deals at £35M and £60M respectively. With total business done of around £100M, they now look forward to investing more and preparing a title-challenging squad.
For quite some time names of French duo Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone have surfaced as potential Liverpool targets.
Now for the last few days, Romeo Lavia has been heavily linked with the Merseyside giants.

Having said so, the Reds have ruled out the possibility of signing Manu Kone. The Frenchman recently picked up a knee injury that lead to the decision.
And new reports suggest that Nice’s inability to make a decision regarding the Thuram situation has made the Merseysiders cool their interest.
Meanwhile Newcastle United might be pursuing Thuram as Eddie Howe looks forward to bolstering their midfield.
Nice might sell the midfielder for around £40M and the Magpies might pounce upon the opportunity.
As a result, Lavia has become their top priority. The Belgian international won the Player of the Year award from Southampton. His performance in the PL earned him links with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
However, Liverpool seems to be the frontrunner in the Lavia saga. The 19-year-old midfielder is reportedly available for around £50M. But it will most probably be settled down to £45M plus add-ons.
So it will be interesting to see how the Reds conduct the business for their 3rd signing this summer.
